Program I: Preventing Sexual Harassment
This is a refreshing way to present training on sexual harassment prevention. Instead of vignettes, this film offers viewers dramatizations of four types of harassers: the jilted, the smitten, the bully, and the habitual. During the dramatization, the actors talk directly to the viewers about what they are thinking and feeling as the scene plays out. Following each scene, experts offer advice and insight. This is an insightful and informative approach to sexual harassment prevention and in conjunction with the second part of this series provides strong training.
PROS- Each dramatization encourages discussion about the harassment that occurred and what the victim should do about it.
- Actors talk directly to viewers, which make their feelings real and honest.
- Film is interspersed with how three victims of harassment felt during and after the harassment.
CONS- It's hard to remain focused during the beginning section of the film, before the dramatizations begin, because there is a lot of talking.
Program II: Responding to Sexual Harassment
Combined with the first part of this series, this is a strong sexual harassment prevention program. Filmed in the same refreshing format with the actor dramatizations and expert assessments, this program demonstrates realistic examples of how to handle harassment. Like the first program, it names the managers' styles in memorable terms viewers can connect with.
PROS- Dramatizations offer realistic view of managers' different responses to harassment in the workplace.
- Film is interspersed with true accounts of three different managers who had to handle a sexual harassment complaint.
- Rewinds show how managers effectively handled the complaint.
CONS- Some of the experts' assessments following the dramatizations are too long.
Program III: Rights & Responsibilities
Quick orientation to sexual harassment prevention introduces the topic and its effects on an organization. I liked the overall theme of personal responsibility and respect that is weaved throughout the experts' and hosts' narratives. However, if employees are going to watch a harassment prevention program, why not offer one that models the appropriate behaviors and teaches how to ask the offenders to stop?
PROS- Good definition of intent versus impact.
- Personal stories illustrate the far-reaching effects of harassment.
- Encourages respect and personal responsibility in the workplace.
CONS- It's only an introduction; doesn't go far enough to raise awareness or inspire employees to change their behaviors.
