A recent study at the University of Cincinnati showed that 82% of Ouch! trainees had already used the Ouch! skills in their workplace interactions and personal lives withing 3 months. The study also documented the trainees had a statistically significant increase in awareness of bias and stereotypes and a lasting positive change in their comfort and confidence to speak up using the Ouch! skills. The study showed that trainees were more likely in the future to speak up against stereotypes of bias they encountered at work, home, and in social settings.
Many people say they want to speak up when they see others stereotyped, disrespected, or demeaned. But they stand by silently because of discomfort or the fear of saying the wrong thing. They may turn away thinking “who am I to get involved, this isn't my business.” In fact, as a bystander, you ARE part of the conversation. You are the audience.
